Almost every Friday, the students will have a Current Events assignment to complete over the weekend. The assignment description is located below. Scroll down past the description for a link to download a PDF of the assignment, including the writing pages and the rubric that will be used to grade student work. I have also attached the individual pages as well, in case a student needs to print out the writing paper for the assignment.
Each Friday, you will be expected to find an article over the weekend to hand in on Monday. This article can either be from a physical newspaper (The New York Times, The Daily News, Newsday, The New York Post, or any other reputable national or local source), or it can be a print out from an online news source. Find an article that appeals to you. The article should be at least 4 paragraphs long and have enough “meat” to it that you can summarize the article and add your own opinion to it.
Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) summarizing the article. Be sure you have factual information included in your summary. Make sure you state where you found your article (which newspaper/online source).
Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) with your opinion on the article. What did you think about the article? If the article made you feel a certain way, share your thoughts. Be sure to provide evidence from the article to support your thoughts and opinions.
Some ideas to consider, depending on the type of article you choose:
- Do you agree/disagree with what is being said?
- Did you learn something new?
- Are you more informed about what is going on in your area, the nation, the world?
- Has the article inspired you?
- Does the article leave you wanting to “take action” and do something?
CUT OUT/PRINT OUT the article. Make sure that if the article is on two separate pages that you take both pages of the article. You MUST attach the article. In the event of printer issues, you may email the article to me.
