Latin America Persuasive Essay

ELA/Writing – Using your research from your Latin American Brochure and the information you have gathered, you are going to write a persuasive, informational essay about your chosen country.

Remember: The point is to CONVINCE someone to visit YOUR country.

Paragraph 1: Introduction

  • Introduce your country with a strong lead. Ex: “Brazil is a beautiful Latin American country with many interesting natural wonders to see and visit.”
  • List some of the reasons to visit your country.
  • Paragraph 2: Physical Features
  • location within Latin America
  • Climate (weather, what someone should pack to visit, seasons).
  • landforms/geography/natural features (DESCRIBE them. Why would someone want to visit them?)
  • Paragraph 3: Culture
  • languages spoken
  • popular food
  • celebrations/popular events/holidays
  • souvenirs to bring home
  • Paragraph 4: Tourist Attractions
  • What are some popular places to visit? Why?
  • Paragraph 5
  • MUST BE A PARAGRAPH
  • Re-state your reasons In your essay, you must use linking words and phrases (however, also, for example, in addition to, therefore, furthermore, unfortunately/fortunately, although) and vary your sentence structure. Do not start off every sentence the same exact way. Make it INTERESTING for your reader to read.

March 1, 2015: In Social Studies, we are currently studying Latin America. The students are creating Informational/Persuasive Travel Brochures about their chosen Latin American country. Students have received an assignment packet with the requirements of the brochures, planning pages, layout of the brochure, and a checklist to help ensure that they include all of the required information. We will be working on this assignment both in class and at home. If you child forgets their packet at school one night/cannot locate their packet, click on the link below to download the complete assignment packet in PDF form

Background: The words ‘Latin America’ are used to describe the group of 21 countries (listed above) in the American continent where Latin languages are spoken. These countries are all located south of the US-Mexico border, starting with Mexico in North America, extending through Central America and parts of the Caribbean and down into the southernmost tip of South America – the region known as Tierra del Fuego.

Latin America shares elements of historical experience, language and culture. This group of countries have more in common with each other, in many respects, than they do with Canada and the US. Having said that, Latin America is also a wonderfully diverse group of countries, as well as a growing political and economic force.
